Plutonium Contamination on Johnston Atoll
Interactive Report/DVD (in development)
Writer, Director, Producer: Lynn B. Wilson, PhD
What does a tiny, "remote" and "uninhabited" Pacific Island have to say to the rest of the world about the impact of ignoring environmental threats of military weapons systems and the importance of speaking up about long-term devastation of land, ocean, and reefs? Plenty. From the end of World War II through the Cold War, the U.S. exploded atomic and nuclear bombs as tests in the Pacific. As a result of failed tests in 1962 just 700 miles southwest of Honolulu, Johnston Atoll is now extensively contaminated with plutonium, one of the deadliest substances known. The goal of this interactive report is to provide basic information related to U.S. nuclear activities on Johnston and to encourage viewers to apply the same lens within their own lives.
